Childrens Hospital Contributes to Passyunk Square Revitalization
South Philadelphia Free Library
Say Goodbye to the gloomy south west corner of Broad & Morris. That’s correct, the old library, the under maintained playground and scary looking health clinic will be demolished in April 2014 . These are the 3 components currently occupying this very visible, high traffic corner in Passyunk Square. I grew up about a block away and never stepped foot in the playground at 15th & Morris which was kind of weird. The basketball court was always a mess, there were never any nets in the rims and usually grass growing in the middle of the court as a result of cracked asphalt.
CHOP Announces Over 30 Million Dollar Plan in Passyunk Square
Earlier this week at Methodist Hospital it was announced at a neighborhood meeting that Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is revitalizing the entire City Block. From Broad to 15th Street and from Morris to Castle Avenue will undergo a complete rehab consisting of a new pediatric center for children & adults, new state of the art library and a top notch public park with basketball courts, plenty of benches, gardens & possibly a fountain. The silver lining is that CHOP is paying for it ! It won’t cost us taxpayers a dime (allegedly).
The CHOP Facility
The Children’s Hospital facility will hopefully be completed by November of 2015 and will stand 3 stories high. The floor to ceiling windows will form a mirror glass structure that will run in the range of over 30 million dollars for the entire project.
